The practice of yoga is said to be thousands of years old and has gone through numerous transitions throughout its history. At Hot Salutations, our students study what is best described as “Hot Vinyasa Flow”
The word Vinyasa is derived from the Sanskrit term nyasa, which means “to place,” and the prefix vi, “in a special way”. Its most common English translation is “breath-synchronized movement.”
Pranayama is the art of breath control. From a Yogic point of view, proper breathing involves controlling the “prana” or vital life energy by bringing more oxygen to the blood and to the brain. We believe that proper breathing and synchronization are also very beneficial in helping the student to focus on his or her practice and achieve the unity of mind/body/spirit that is at the core of all Yoga.
Our approach to Vinyasa flow yoga produces a smooth sequence of postures, known or “asanas”, one leading into the next. Each movement in the series is completed on an inhalation or an exhalation. Through focus on achieving proper form and on breathing, it allows each student to progress at their individual pace and challenge themselves regardless of their experience level.
Our emphasis is on movement and the physical results include cardiovascular improvement, strength training through muscle resistance, and joint therapy. Beyond the physical benefits, regular Vinyasa flow yoga practice can bring about a state of balance and peace that can be felt in every aspect of the student’s life outside the studio.
As a chosen form of practice, we believe that Vinyasa’s strength is in its diversity. There is no rulebook or rigid philosophy to follow. The teacher is free to create their own series of asanas. This is key because it allows for almost unlimited potential for variety, which keeps the student engaged and focused in the moment.
If you enjoy the unpredictable and thrive on variety, our style of Vinyasa flow yoga is probably perfect for you.
